Soy foods have been touted as providing many health benefits. If you pop into any supermarket you are bound to see a list of soy products, including milks and cheeses. Undoubtedly you will associate soy foods with many health benefits. But some reports suggest that soy foods may actually be dangerous.
Can soy foods pose a risk to your health?
Some studies associate soy foods with an increased risk of certain types of cancer. This includes an increased risk of possible breast cancer. This is because soy foods increase the amount of estrogen in the body. Soy foods contain plant chemicals referred to as isoflavones. Isoflavones can be found in many different items including legumes, grains, vegetables and other natural foods.
Soybeans contain more isoflavones than any other product and thus bind to the body’s estrogen receptors. While soy can have effects in the body that are very similar to estrogen, soy is not as strong or nearly as potent as natural estrogen. Human or naturally produced estrogen is far stronger.
Isoflavones do have healthy effects on the body. This includes helping to foster new cell growth which can actually work to prevent the growth of cancer in the body. Soy can also help to reduce and regulate cholesterol in the body. Many people that eat soy have a generally healthier diet than other individuals who consume more meat based products.
Some studies suggest that individuals that eat soy have lower rates of breast cancer. Still other studies suggest that soy is good for the heart, because it can help to lower blood pressure. This is because soy may encourage the body to produce a substance known as nitric oxide, which can promote dilation of the blood vessels. This reduces pressure in the vessel walls, reducing total blood pressure. The risks of eating soy seem to be far less at this point than the benefits of eating soy. As with anything it is always a good idea to consult with a healthcare provider before adopting any diet or health plan.
