Vitamin D is commonly known as just a vitamin and it is usually associated with healthy bone development. But vitamin D is much more than that. Vitamin D is actually one of the oldest prohormones. Vitamin D's metabolic product is actually a secosteroid hormone, which functions as key, unlocking more than 2,700 binding sites for calcitrol.  These binding cites are found near genes that are involved with many major disease. 

Types of vitamin D

Vitamin D3 - This type of vitamin D is produced in human skin in response to exposure to the sun. Supplements of vitamin D3 can be found in lanolin or cod liver oil extract.

Vitamin D2 - This type of vitamin is derived from fungal sources in supplements. This type of vitamin D is not present in the human body. Furthermore, the preferred Vitamin D type to be used is Vitamin D3.
